Srikakulam: A mini hydro power project at Vamsadhara reservoir project on Vamsadhara River near Hira mandal head quarters has taken a back seat. Previously discussion was going on the hydro power project between reservoir and existing barrage at Gotta across the river between Chief Engineer (CE) of Central Design Organization (CDO), Giridhar Reddy, Engineer-in-Chief (ENC), Ravi Kumar and irrigation advisor, R. Satyanarayana.

  • Estimated cost goes up
  • Government did not gave nod for enhanced estimations
  • Contracting company kept aside the proposal

While inspecting the reservoir site it was felt that to release surplus water into river from reservoir, a spillway is required and to release water to left main canal through existing Gotta barrage a sluice is also needed. The reservoir minimum level of water is 47.5 metres and maximum level is 67.5 metres depth. While releasing water from the reservoir through both spillway and sluice 20 meters height difference is available. If turbines are arranged at 20 metres down from reservoir’s minimum level, power can be generated.

At that time of visit of high level engineering team proposals were made to produce 20 mega watts of power at reservoir by constructing a power block. Initially government was planning to hand over the hydro power project to existing contracting company which is constructing the reservoir. As part of it engineering officials prepared estimations at Rs 10 crore but contracting company reportedly managed the higher officials and enhanced estimations as Rs 30 crore. But government did not give its nod for enhanced estimations and directed Vamsadhara officials for reconsideration.

Again officials prepared estimations for Rs 11 crore. Upset with the estimations contracting company started neglecting the project.Previously power generation project was proposed at Vamsadhara reservoir admitted superintendent engineer (SE), Bhojaraju Appala Naidu. In the wake of enhanced estimations and re-considerations government not willing on the project the SE added.
