Pithapuram: A 24-year-old notorious chain snatcher was arrested at a jewellery shop in Kotagummam here on Monday and 120 grams of gold worth Rs 3.5 lakh was recovered from them, the police said. The accused was identified as Gullapalli Durgalu of Upparagudem in Kottapalli mandal in East Godavari district. He was an auto-rickshaw driver by day and a chain-snatcher by night.

Durgalu, drives three-wheeler during the day to identify lonely women living in remote areas. His modus operandi was to knock at the doors of isolated houses during night and snatch gold chain from the women as and when they answer the door and flee the place in his three-wheeler parked at a nearby place.

Noting that the incidents that had taken place at Karur Vysya Bank and Chitrada Green Field, the police dispatched teams headed by SIs P Sobhan Kumar and PVR Murthy and conducted the probe. The police said that Durgalu was involved in chain snatching incidents at Pithapuram, Chitrada, Timmapuram, Kakinada rural mandal and Gangavaram in Ramachandrapuram mandal.
