The election of Proddutur municipal chairman was conducted peacefully on Monday after it was earlier postponed twice by the State Election Commission due to law and order problem following clashes between two groups within the TDP.

There are totally 40 councillors in Produturu municipality. Among them 9 were elected under YSR Congress banner and remaining 31 got elected with TDP ticket. However, the 9 YSR Congress councillors skipped the election, while the 31 TDP councillors unanimously elected A Raghurami Reddy as chairman. Speaking to media persons after the election, Minister C Adi Narayana Reddy said that due to conspiracy hatched by some persons there was disunity among the party councillors earlier, which led to postponement of the chairman election twice.

He said that as per the party’s earlier decision, the councillors unanimously elected A Raghurami Reddy as chairman of Proddutur municipality. He urged the new chairman to strive for the development of Proddutur municipality. While N Vardarajula Reddy proposed A Raghurami Reddy for the chairman post, Linga reddy backed SD Muftiar for the same post.

The bitter rivalry between the two groups attracted the attention of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu who intervened in the matter in the last week of April and pacified both the groups.Following directions of the Chief Minister, SD Muftiar dropped from the contest and the path was cleared for Raghurami Reddy to become the Chairman of Proddutur municipality.
