Nearly 515 road accidents have taken place in city limits so far - from January 2017 to April 30- and about 111 people have died in the road accidents due to lack of awareness over traffic rules. Nearly 1640 road accidents took place in 2016 in city limits and 362 people had died.

This is the state of affairs despite police department deploying more than 1000 CC cameras to reduce traffic jams and controlling traffic violations in the city

Vijayawada: It seems road safety is totally absent in Vijayawada city. Nearly 515 road accidents have taken place in city limits so far - from January 2017 to April 30- and about 111 people have died in the road accidents due to lack of awareness over traffic rules. Nearly 1640 road accidents took place in 2016 in city limits and 362 people had died.

City people are facing traffic problems mainly at Ramavarappadu ring road, Gollapudi Y Junction, Bandar road, Patamata and other areas in the city due to lack of awareness over traffic rules. The police department is deploying more than 1000 CC cameras to reduce traffic jams, controlling traffic violations in the city and taking action on vehicle drivers who are violating traffic rules in the city.

From January 2017 onwards, the police department registered 1229 drunken driving cases and imposed Rs 7, 85,003 fine on them so far. Voluntary Health Education and Economical Development Unit (VHEEDU) Executive Director M Vasu Said that KLU, Narayana and Sri Chaitanya and other college managements need to educate their students on road safety education as police conducted counseling of private college students who were violating traffic rules in the city.

He said that the state government should take serious action on business people who have occupied road space for doing business because it led to traffic jams and road accidents.He mentioned that the all section of people must save their parents and friends mobile numbers as In Case of Emergency (ICE) at their mobile contact list for informing to them regarding emergency time and police department needed to train traffic police over how to deal with an injured person after a road accident.
