Guntur: Pradesh Congress president N Raghuveera Reddy, former minister Kanumuri Bapiraju, DCC president Makkena Mallikarjuna Rao staged a protest in front of Guntur Mirchi Yard chairman's office demanding better price for chilli.

Raising slogans against the government, they accused it of failing to provide a better price to crops, including chillis and turmeric, which led to farmers incurring heavy losses.

Raghuveera Reddy said chilli prices had plummeted to Rs 2,500-Rs 3,000 now from the Rs 5,500-Rs 6000 per quintal at the beginning of season. “Because of this fall in prices, farmers are not even getting back their investment on crops.

Unable to bear the agony, some of them are even resorting to suicide. The state government is responsible for the plight of chilli and turmeric farmers,” he said demanded that the government purchase chillis through Markfed and Nafed at Rs 10,000 per quintal.

He also asked the government to pay a compensation of Rs 1,500 per quintal to the farmers who had sold chilli stocks earlier. Former minister Kanumuri Bapiraju said Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu was claiming that the TDP government was committed to the welfare of farmers, but farmers were not getting a better price for chillis, turmeric and other crops.

He said TDP government did nothing for the farmers and failed to implement the crop loan wavier scheme to all the farmers. He warned that farmers will teach lesson to the TDP in the coming elections.

Earlier, the Congress leaders interacted with farmers and enquired about chilli prices. The farmers told that prices of chilli had been falling since the government announced Rs 1,500 compensation and added that traders were cheating the innocent farmers.

A farmer told them that commission agents and supervisors were offering lower price on the pretext of “sub-standard” quality of chillis after they brought stocks to the yard bearing expenses. The farmers demanded that the officials check this price fixing in the yard.
