A high alert has been sounded in Nallamala forest region spreading across two Telugu states. Vigil has been stepped up for the Maoists suspecting that the they will pay tribute to their comrades during the Martyrs’ week, commencing from May 24, as part of the golden jubilee celebrations of the Naxalbari movement. 

Atmakur (Kurnool): A high alert has been sounded in Nallamala forest region spreading across two Telugu states. Vigil has been stepped up for the Maoists suspecting that the they will pay tribute to their comrades during the Martyrs’ week, commencing from May 24, as part of the golden jubilee celebrations of the Naxalbari movement.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, at a meeting of the Chief Ministers of 10 Maoist-affected states held recently, went on record stating that the Centre was ready for war with the Maoists sending shivers down the spines of the tribals living in the Nallamala forest region, Left parties and the Maoist sympathisers.

According to intelligence reports, the Maoists are through with the recruitment of the cadre in Telugu states at an undisclosed place in the Nallamala forest. The police stepped up vigil anticipating that the Maoists hold meetings to pay tributes to their departed comrades at any place in the forest region on the banks of River Krishna.

The Union government prepared a strategy titled ‘Samaadhaan’ to tackle the Maoist menace and asked the Maoist-hit states to implement it. Over 2,000 Cobra commandos would be sent to Chhattisgarh to weed out the Maoists.

The Union government gave orders to the States to paralyse the financial resources of the Maoists. Vigil has been stepped up on activities of contractors of major irrigation projects in Kurnool district as it felt that the contractors constituted vital source of funding for the Maoists.

The centre confirmed that the Maoists were equipped with the rocket launchers and the land mines. Meanwhile, the State government officials have drawn up a plan to weaken the Maoist movement by undertaking development works in Agency villages and tribal thandas.

The Union Home department targeted Kurnool and Prakasam districts and Mahabubnagar and Nalgonda districts in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana states to weed out the Maoists. As a result, a high alert has been sounded in the forest region.
