Visakhapatnam: The panel of M Ananda Rao of AITUC supported by TNTUC and INTUC, has won the recognised union election of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) on ‘Kaagada’ symbol , the result of which was declared late on Tuesday night.

Supported by HMS, Vamana Rao panel has contested on behalf of Staff and Workers’ Union with the symbol of Bell while Venkata Reddy contested on behalf of CITU with the symbol of Star. However, the main contest was between Vamana Rao and Ananda Rao and of the total 3,238 voters, 2,940 have exercised their franchise of which Ananda Rao has secured 1,818 votes, Vamana Rao 773 and Venkata Reddy 273 votes. Thus, AITUC candidate Ananda Rao has defeated his rival candidates with a huge majority of 1,045 votes which was officially declared.

The authorities had set up six polling booths at the GVMC main office and one each at Anakapalli, Madhuravada and Gajuwaka and the election was held from 9 am onwards on Tuesday. Soon after official declaration of election result, a jubilant Ananda Rao assured that his panel of leaders would work for the welfare of workers for the trust and faith shown and also for the growth of the Corporation.

Among others, MLA Velagapudi Ramakrishna Babu, Visakhapatnam District NGOs’ Association President Eswara Rao and RTC Union leader Srinivasa Rao congratulated Ananda Rao on the occasion.Later, M Ananda Rao met the Municipal Commissioner M Harinarayanan here on Wednesday to greet the latter for securing an award of Third Cleanest City in India in the recently concluded Swachh Sarvekshan. The civic chief also greeted Ananda Rao for winning the recognized union election. Additional Commissioner (Gen) G V V S Murty was also present.
