1091 villages have no water supply, Collector tells ZP meeting
Visakhapatnam: Local MP Dr K Haribabu, MLAs and other people’s representatives pulled up officials, particularly rural water supply engineers for prevailing shortage of drinking water supply and slow down in road laying works, at the zilla parishad general body meeting held here on Wednesday.MP Dr Haribabu questioned the officials why funds sanctioned by him were not spent so far in Bhimili mandal for laying of roads and augmenting drinking water supply. He was surprised when the officials told him that they were not aware of the funds.

Anakapalle MLA Peela Govind Satyanarayana said many works, particularly drinking water supply schemes were stalled due to MLC election code but the works did not resume even after the elections were over long ago.Yelamanchili MLA Panchakarla Ramesh Babu said hand pumps were not working in many villages under his constituency and wanted to know how many calls were received by the call center established for this purpose. He sought to know from the RWS officials why water tankers were not being sent to villages facing acute drinking water supply.

Similarly MPPs of Chidikada, Paderu and other agency mandals told the meeting that the condition in the agency has become pathetic and no attention was being paid towards supply of drinking water.Collector Pavin Kumar admitted that 1091 villages in the agency have no drinking water supply. He said an action plan is being prepared with Rs 113 crore funds sanctioned for new borewells and gravity based water supply schemes.

Rural water supply superintendent engineer N Meher Prasad told the meeting that 13 projects have been sanctioned for streamlining water supply in the agency and 5 projects have been completed. The other projects are under various stages of completion.He said Rs 9.68 lakh has been sanctioned for repair of borewells and NABARD had approved Rs 18.20 crore for comprehensive water supply schemes for both rural and agency areas. Detailed project reports have been submitted in this regard, he added.

Similarly Rs 7.25 crore has been sanctioned for water supply schemes for four villages in Bhimili mandal.The leaders were also unhappy over the poor health services in the agency and rural villages of the district.Madugula MLA Budi Mutyala Naidu said due to lack of ambulance services, pregnant women were being denied medical care during the advanced stage.
District Medical and Health Officer Dr K Uma Sundari said there was shortage of doctors and ANMs in the agency hospitals and a request has been sent to the government to fill the vacancies soon. Chairman of zilla parishad Lalam Bhavani presided over the meeting.
