Hundreds of residents and leaders of various welfare organisations are protesting against the setting up of a cell tower in Malkapuram area of the city. They sent petitions to the GVMC and even lodged a complaint against the building owner in the police station. Around 10,000 families are residing in this area and it is a mix of both north Indians and local people.

It all began with Dr Indra Pal Singh, an unauthorized medical practitioner, who went out of practice, had decided to allow a cell service company to set up its tower on his terrace. The contractor, who was assigned the task of setting up the tower, suggested against the location. The trouble began on Monday when members of DWCRA group and community leaders requested Dr Singh to cancel the agreement.

While the arguments were going on, the cellular company manager, who claimed to be former police officer, argued with the residents. As pressure from residents mounted, he walked away from the site.Dr Singh’s neighbor M Damodhar told this correspondent that local residents canceled the contracts with two cellular companies and got the towers removed after their children started suffering from radiation. As the quack refused to budge, the local residents and leaders lodged a complaint with the Malkapuram police station on Wednesday.
