Kadapa: To prevent human trafficking and child marriages in the district, a meeting was organised here on Thursday with the officials of the Revenue and Police departments. Human trafficking is rampant in the towns like Rayachoti, Sambepalle, Galiveedu and Rajampet. Women are sold away to red light areas located in cities like Mumbai to indulge them in flesh trade and children are being illegally transported to North Indian states for begging. There are several instances of child marriages were performed in the district.

District Collector T Baburao Naidu has participated in the meeting. Addressing the meeting, the Collector called for effective coordination between various departments for preventing human trafficking and child marriages. He stated that such illegal activities are still prevalent in the district because of poverty. Naidu said that the state government has introduced several welfare schemes for uplift of women in weaker sections of the society.

The government is committed to women empowerment, he added. The official said 4.72 lakh SHG women across the district are availing welfare schemes.District Principal Civil Judge and District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) chairman V Srinivas said 92 cases in Kadapa division, 65 cases in Jammalamadugu division and 42 cases in Rajampet division were registered in the last 5 years with regard to child marriages.

He said human trafficking is going on despite several attempts to prevent them. The DLSA chairman said that there are 11,197 school dropouts in the district as per the official records. He urged the officials to ensure effective implementation of the Child Protection Act. Additional SP (Operations) B Satya Yesubabu, Pulivendula ASP Anbu Rajan, Vempalli ASP Gowthami and other officials were present.
