International games like Baseball and Basketball are attracting children towards the summer coaching camp that is being organised by Krishna District Sports Authority (DSA), Krishna District Baseball Association and Nirmala high school at Nirmala high school in the city. As many as 100 children are taking part in camp.

As many as 100 children are taking part in camp.

Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh (SAAP) is regularly conducting summer coaching camps in most sports and games every year. This year SAAP has allotted Rs 5 lakh to each district to conduct coaching camps, pay the coaches and purchase of sports material. Krishna DSA is organising 20 camps at Vijayawada and 30 camps at rural areas in the district.

When compared to earlier days Baseball and Basket ball are attracting more students from schoo. Children at the age 10-years are enthusiastically participating in these two games. They are attracted by watching International matches in TVs. Krishna District Baseball Association (KDBA) president T Tulasi Rao and National Referee T Sri Latha are coaching budding baseball players.

Baseball is to be reintroduced in the Olympics that will be conducted in 2020. The KDBA conducted Junior Nationals at Gudivada which inspired several students to play the game. In the summer camps, children learn to bat, pinch, catch and other techniques related to the game.

Basketball is a new favorite among both, the boys and girls. The camps usually start at 6.30am with a little bit of jogging and warm up. Later, children enter the basketball court with and are taught to dribble, pass the ball, tap, ball control and tape shots while running.

Basketball coach SS Anand trained the campers with techniques and how to play game intelligently, said M Sathvik, a junior player who is coaching at the summer camp. “My aim is to play for the Indian team and get a good name for my school and parents,” he added. T Sivani, a girl studying in the seventh class showed interest in basketball after watching several tournaments in the city.
