Chittoor: Thousands of buildings have constructed in the city without obtaining prior approval for the building plan from the Chittoor Municipal Corporation (CMC) commissioner. It is learnt that town planning officials are giving permission for unauthorised constructions as the behest of the ruling TDP corporators. It is mandatory to obtain building plan approval from the civic body prior to the commencement of construction activity. According to official sources, more than 2,500 buildings were constructed in the last five years without approval.

  • More than 2,500 buildings constructed in the last 5 years without approval
  • Ruling TDP leaders purchased the DKT lands and constructed the houses in several localities
  • Town planning officials are giving permission for unauthorised constructions by taking bribe from building owners
  • Illegal constructions would be demolished soon, says Mayor

Interestingly, most of the buildings were constructed in 18 slums without obtaining permission from the Town Planning department. Sources say that owners have constructed buildings by bribing Town Planning officials. As a result, the civic body is losing revenue considerably. Several houses and commercial buildings were constructed by encroaching roads and public places in the city.

The ruling TDP leaders reportedly purchased the DKT sites and constructed the houses at Sanjay Gandhi Nagar, Santhapet, Durga Nagar Colony, Prasanth Nagar and Doddipalli localities. The building contractors allegedly have made it regular practice to lift the sand from the reaches during nights and dump openly on the roads near construction sites. Officials of the Police, Revenue and Town Planning departments have become mute spectators instead of taking action against them.

Speaking to The Hans India here on Thursday, city Mayor K Hemalatha expressed anger over Town Planning officials for not taking action against illegal constructions. She said that corporation officials would demolish illegal buildings after verifying whether they have obtained permission or not from the Town Planning department. “A special drive would be launched soon for identifying unauthorised buildings in every division,” she added. She warned of taking action against corrupt officials after serving notices to them. The Mayor instructed the Chief Town Planning Officer to identify illegal constructions and encroachments within a week.
