State to supply commodities to Social Welfare hostels
West Godavari district was selected as pilot project district for the programme where the social welfare hostels are set to get qualitative commodities directly from the government, according to the state social welfare department director M Rama Rao. According to him, a plan was chalked out in this regard and soon all hostels would get the qualitative commodities including fine rice.

The director who visited Eluru discussed with the collector K Bhaskar in his chamber on Thursday on the implementation of the pilot project.At present, the officials are purchasing the essential commodities to the hostels, which are low-quality and the students are suffering from this low-quality food. In view of this, the government planned to supply the needy essential commodities to all the welfare hostels and Anganwadi Centres directly. These essential commodities will be procured locally in the hostel areas said the director.
“On a trial basis, west Godavari district was selected for the pilot project and in the first phase, five varieties of essential commodities will be supplied directly to hostels. This includes fine rice, quality edible oil, red gram, sugar and iodized salt.
After studying the implementation in West Godavari district, this scheme will be extended to another district from next financial year and supply all welfare hostels, Residential schools, Anganwadi Centres,” he said. Besides these commodities, the qualitative tamarind, turmeric, Chilli powder will also be supplied from tribal cooperative societies.
