  • The incident may have happened due to contaminated water say hostel authorities
  • Students were being trained for strengthening livelihood opportunities in a central government sponsored scheme

The DDU-GKY is a centrally sponsored scheme wherein the rural students were admitted and given training in various trades. To strengthen the livelihood of the rural students (boys and girls), the central government has launched the programme. The students are provided with hostel facility free of cost and the expenses would be borne by the central government. After completion of training, they would be placed in telecom sector, call centres etc.

The training centre has been facilitated with a hostel to cook and serve food to the students. As usual the hostel organisers served food to the students on Thursday. Within 30 minutes, thirty students have developed vomiting and loose motions. They were immediately rushed to Kurnool General Hospital for treatment.

K Ramesh, a student of DDU-GKY institute said that they had lunch served by the hostel organisers on Thursday. After eating the food, we noticed some students vomiting at the premises. We thought that vomiting might have happened due to heat waves, he added. The hostel staff immediately rushed all the ill students to the hospital, he stated.

Hospital Superintendent J Veera Swamy said that the students fell ill due to food poisoning. “All are being given good treatment and they are out of danger,” he stated. On learning about the incident, Kurnool Tahsildar Ramesh Babu visited the hospital and enquired about the incident. He said that he will enquire into the issue. The hostel organisers said that the incident may have happened due to drinking of contaminated water.
