Visakhapatnam: The Southwest Monsoon is likely to make an onset around May 17 over South Andaman Sea, a week before its normal date. It will take a week or so to set in over Kerala and another week to reach Andhra Pradesh.

“The monsoon will touch early in Rayalaseema during the first week of June giving a respite to the region from severe heat conditions,’’ said Prof OSRU Bhanu Kumar, former head of Meteorological Sciences, Andhra University.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • AP will have rains from June first week
  • Temperatures to shoot up in coast from today

Talking to this correspondent, he said there will be an increased intensity of rainfall over South Andaman Sea during the next two to three days following a formation of cyclonic circulation over the sea.

Prof Bhanu Kumar said the Southwest Monsoon has its origin in southern hemisphere and divides into two branches. One system moves to Bay of Bengal and the other to Arabian Sea. Bay of Bengal arm is an indicator of the monsoon while the Arabian Sea wing brings the actual monsoon to the whole of the country.

Private website Skymet.com also predicted early onset of the Southwest Monsoon on Saturday. It said slowly and steadily, weather conditions were becoming conducive for the arrival of the monsoon over the Andaman and Nicobar Islands in the next few days.

Weather experts predicted that the system is most likely to get more marked and induce a low pressure area over the same area. This weather system is likely to bring moderate to heavy rains over South Andaman Sea from May 15 onwards, making weather conditions conducive for declaration of the Southwest Monsoon.

The experts also said the onset of monsoon over Andaman and Nicobar Islands does not have any relation on when it will reach the Indian mainland of Kerala. Normally, Monsoon takes around two weeks to reach Kerala after making onset over the Islands.

The official date for the commencement of the monsoon season in India is June 1, which spans across four months till September 30.

Meanwhile, Indian Space Research Organisation predicted a rise in temperatures during the next 24 hours. ISRO said hot winds from northwest India will rise the temperatures in Andhra Pradesh by 3 to 4 degrees Celsius from May 14 to May 18.
