Vijayawada: In mid-summer, people in the city are concerned about quality of water being supplied to them. Even though the water supply source (Vijayawada Municipal Corporation) can’t be blamed directly for it, damaged pipelines and leaks in supply lines are polluting water. Even the aerated and packaged water sold in the name of mineral water by private suppliers also contain contamination as the private suppliers failed to stick to procedures involved in cleaning water.

The corporation has been supplying water to even hilly areas in the city by using boosters at key areas. To supply water to all households, the local body is taking all measures. It is supplying 180 million litres everyday by keeping in mind the needs of 12 lakh people. While households get water two times regularly for about four hours, water is also being supplied through 2,976 public taps. In addition to these, handpumps were laid at 1,866 places.
In spite of the efforts to supply water, people from different localities have been complaining about the quality of water being supplied. They are complaining about discoloured water and smell. Complaints galore during the summer due to leakages in water supply lines.
When people use motors to drag water from supply lines, a vacuum is created causing damage to supply line. An official of the corporation said that water pipelines got damaged because of the vacuum. Road caved in at three places in One Town recently because of these reasons. When damage to pipeline occurs, the leakage creates mud around the pipeline for some distance. Even the vacuum sucks mud inside the pipe resulting in contamination, he said.
Another important source for contamination is water collected for supply. As it is summer, many water species die because of excessive heat. When these things are taken along with water for supply, the purification would be not complete. Hence, the problem, he added.
People who are conscious of their health go for purchase of ‘purified’ water from private vendors. A 20-litre water bubble is being sold for Rs 10 (plain water) and Rs 25 (if it is cool) by many private vendors. Even though they do not have any equipment to put the water under reverse osmosis and other cleaning procedures, they supply water obtained from various other sources.
A Amit, marketing manager, iPure protected water scheme, said that most of private vendors of water lacked machinery to clean water as it requires investment of Rs 17 lakh. “We are a service-oriented group and have two units in Durgapuram and Vidyadharapuram,” he said.
Meanwhile, NTR Sujala Sravanti RO units are inadequate to meet the summer demand in the city. At many places, these
units were closed for unknown reasons.
