Atmakuru: As a prelude to the May 21 public meeting titled ‘Rayalaseema Jala Chaitanya Sabha’ at Nandyal, Rayalaseema Saguneeti Samiti (RSSS) president Dr Naganna flagged off a motorcycle rally here on Saturday and he, along with the motorcycle rally, toured 12 village panchayats in Kothapalli mandal to sensitise farmers on the need to allot water to the Rayalaseema region.

Speakers at the awareness meetings breathed fire on Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu for diverting all development projects to Amaravati in Andhra region as it has 123 MLA seats compared to 52 in Rayalaseema region. The RSSS leaders said that they would not keep mum if the water from the Srisailam, Pattiseema, Polavaram, Pulichintala and Nagarjunasagar projects were to be diverted to Andhra region.

They demanded statehood to the Rayalaseema region for allotment of its share of water for irrigation. They felt that the region had so far suffered discrimination at the hands of coastal Andhra rulers. Rayalaseema Vidyavantula Vedika convener Arun apprehended that the current dry spell would extend for 10 more years unless the Siddheswaram Weir project is executed. The project seeks to make available at least 50 tmc of water to the region.
