Nellore: Students of Vikrama Simhapuri University (VSU), who agitated for basic amenities in the hostels, are now facing a police case filed by the varsity authorities. They are worried that the varsity officials will not allow them to participate in any programmes taken up by the VSU.

The varsity officials filed a case against students when they took out a padayatra to Hyderabad from here and met Jana Sena founder Pawan Kalyan in March this year over lack of hostel facilities at VSU. The officials concerned assured of lifting the case against students when they gave representation.

The students staged a protest in front of the varsity building here on Monday, demanding officials to fulfil the assurance of withdrawing case. They raised slogans against Vice-Chancellor V Veeraiah and other officials. Some of the students tried to immolate themselves by pouring petrol. Immediately, Venkatachalam police rushed to the spot and foiled their bid. Students said that they were facing difficulties with the case filed against them by the varsity authorities. They also explained that they have been losing employment opportunities due to the case.

“Vice-Chancellor has been harassing us as we have lodges complaints with HRD Minister Ganta Srinivas Rao and Jana Sena chief Pawan Kalyan,” said VSU student K Gangi Reddy. If the varsity authorities don’t withdraw the case then the students of Tourism courses would lose employment opportunities, he added. The students said city DSP also assured them of lifting the case after speaking to local police officials. But, the varsity authorities reportedly are not interested to withdraw the case. “If cases were not withdrawn then we have no other option but to intensify the stir,” said another student J Sudhir.
