Uravakonda (Anantapur): Sriram Reddy Drinking Water scheme which caters to 11 lakh residents in Kalyandurg, Madakasira and Hindupur municipalities has suffered disruption to water supply for four days due to a technical snag developed in the pump house motors.

Technical snag of the motors was rectified and water supply to several villages and four municipalities has been restored on Sunday night, thanks to the initiative of District Collector Veera Pandian and the Chief Minister's directive in this regard. The utter callousness of the officials is reflected in the fact no initiative had been taken to repair its first motor.

Highlights:

  • 11 lakh residents in Kalyandurg, Madakasira and Hindupur municipalities suffered with non-availability of drinking water
  • People in 1,000 villages also faced difficulties with stoppage of water supply
  • Drinking water supply disrupted due to technical snag in the pump house motors of Sriram Reddy Drinking Water scheme

After the first motor had developed repairs, the second motor too developed technical snags and disrupted the entire drinking water supply to a host of villages and municipal towns. For a drinking water scheme of this magnitude, no precautions had been taken to meet with any eventualities but the issue had been treated in a casual manner. After the collapse of the scheme operation, people took to the streets and agitated with empty pots.

Finally, YSRCP MLA Vishveshwar Reddy was forced to lead a demonstration to the Penna Ahobilam Balancing Reservoir (PABR). The farmers and the stake holders feel that the pump house should have four motors including 2 on a standby for the hassle-free operation of the water scheme.

Minister for Information and Housing Kalava Srinivas has directed the irrigation officials to immediately send proposals for acquiring spare motors for pumping the water from the Sriram Reddy Drinking Water project pump house at the PABR dam in Kuderu mandal, so that he could take up the issue with the Chief Minister.

The break-down of the motor at the pump house resulted in disruption of water supply to scores of villages in six Assembly constituencies in the project region. 11 lakh people in Kalyandurg, Madakasira and Hindupur municipalities are dependent on the scheme for drinking water. The pump house required two spare 825 hp motors.

Every day, 63 MLD of water is required for supplying water to the 11 lakh people but presently 38 MLD of water is being supplied to every day due to non-functioning of two motors for pumping the water to all the three municipalities. The Uravakonda MLA told The Hans India that 1,000 villages were affected due to disruption caused to drinking water supply.

Reddy decried the callousness of the authorities in being alert and in taking precautions anticipating technical snags. For four days, water supply to 1,000 villages had been stopped and people were subject to scarcity of drinking water. He urged the Collector to ensure that such sort of problems not repeated.
