The magistrate, who had taken a serious view on drunken driving, has already sent 30 persons to jail during the last one month.On May 11, she meted out the same punishment-manning traffic duties to five persons. Appreciating the measure, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police K Mahendra Patrudu said so far 107 motorists were sentenced for drunken driving in 2017 till April end. Around 35 per cent of convicted drunken motorists are auto drivers in Vizag city.

Vizag has won the dubious distinction of recording the maximum number of drunken driving cases in the state. The traffic police registered a total of 19,000 drunken driving cases in 2016 and a fine of Rs1.36 crore was collected from them.
