Encroachments on footpaths endanger lives of pedestrians
Pedestrians are forced to walk on roads endangering their lives as footpaths are encroached. According to sources, traders, hawkers, vegetable vendors and fruit sellers have occupied footpaths in busy streets especially in Church and Hospital roads with the support of local TDP leaders.

According to sources, traders, hawkers, vegetable vendors and fruit sellers have occupied footpaths in busy streets especially in Church and Hospital roads with the support of local TDP leaders. They are running businesses on either side of footpaths in busy streets unmindful of causing inconvenience to pedestrians. Traffic jams have become common phenomenon with pedestrians walking on the roads.

It is learnt that encroachers are paying Rs 20 per day for unauthorised contractors for using the footpath for business purpose. More than 200 stalls on footpaths are doing business on either side of the Church road. Encroachers are continuing the business on footpaths by allegedly paying bribes to police officials whenever they are evicted from footpaths. Pedestrians are becoming victims of accidents as they are walking on roads. City beautification works are hit with encroachment of footpaths.
Speaking to The Hans India here on Wednesday, Chittoor Municipal Corporation Commissioner G Balasurbramanyam assured of evicting encroachers on footpaths with the assistance of traffic police. He stated footpaths are constructed on either side of Church road with a cost of Rs 75 lakh to provide hassle free walk to pedestrians. He admitted the purpose of constructing the footpaths in the city was unserved due to various reasons. He agreed that certain encroachers of the footpaths are paying Rs 20 per day as gate fee to the contractor of the municipal vegetable market.
