City Square at Swaraj Maidan opposed

Vijayawada: All the political parties collectively demanded that the government withdraw the proposal of constructing Vijayawada City Square at the Swaraj Maidan) by GIIC, a Chinese construction company. A round-table was held at the Press Club here on Wednesday headed by Vadde Sobhanadreeswara Rao. In a congested city like Vijayawada, Swaraj Maidan is the only lung space available for the people, with hills, canals and concrete carpet.

All the political parties had decided that the PWD ground, which is known as Swaraj Maidan, would remain as it is. Swaraj Maidan has glorious past as many freedom fighters, Chief Ministers, Prime Minister had held meetings at the ground. Every year book exhibition is being held with about 300 books stalls from across the country.

Similarly, Krishna Agricultural and Industrial exhibition is being held, besides handicraft exhibitions. Swaraj Maidan was accessible for people as it is near to bus station, railway station and local bus stop. Hence, the government should withdraw the proposal of City Square as it would create traffic problems, as part of environmental conservation the open land should be left free.
