Tirupati: The Red Sanders Anti-Smuggling Task Force (RSASTF) personnel conducted a sensitisation programme on Sunday in the villages located deep in the forest of Tamil Nadu in which most of the red sanders smugglers reside. The RSASTF officials enlightened them about the consequences of the crime as the AP government had amended the act to make it more stringent.

In 2015, a major encounter took place at Seshachalam forest near Chandragiri mandal in which 20 smugglers lost their lives. After that, incidents of attacks by smugglers on task force police and counter attacks by the police were reported on various occasions. The task force personnel seizing the red sanders logs became the regular event. The Forest department officials claim around 80 per cent smuggling was curtailed in Seshachalam Hills.

In this backdrop, IGP Dr Kantha Rao intended to conduct a survey on socio-economic status of the people of various areas of Tamil Nadu state for analysis. As a part of the survey as well as sensitisation programme, he led the team which visited various villages of Krishnagiri district on Sunday morning.

They conducted a survey and awareness programmes at Sinthagampatti village in Bargur taluk and Balaguri village of Krishnagiri district.The people of these villages supported task force for preventing the cutting of trees. They spoke out boldly against the red sanders smugglers and proved their love for the nature. They were very happy to interact with the team. The team received tremendous response especially from Balaguri villagers.

They expressed their affection towards the task force team and assured that they will abide by the law. They said that they were aware of the consequences of red sanders smuggling. The team led by Kantha Rao came to a conclusion that except a group in Javvadimalai, the rest of the Tamil Nadu is against such smuggling. Inspector Chandrasekhar, FRO Viswamurthy, SI Ashok, police constables Tirupal and Sudheer accompanied the IGP.
