Kadapa: Taking exception to Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi’s criticism of Centre on Special Category Status (SCS) to Andhra Pradesh in Guntur public meeting, BJP MLC Somu Veerraju alleged that Congress was trying to provoke the sentiments of the people in the name of SCS for its political existence.

Speaking to media persons here on Tuesday, Veerraju said that if AP would have received a mere Rs 2,500 crores under SCS, but the BJP-lead NDA government had provided Rs 2.3 lakh crore under Special Economic Package for the development of state. He said it was the Congress which carried out the bifurcation of AP in an undemocratic manner.

Blaming the Congress government for the backwardness of Rayalaseema, the BJP leader said if Badrachalam and Dummugudem tail-pond were not merged in Telangana, there would have been a possibility of Rayalaseema districts getting 200 tm ft of water through Dummugudem project as 2 lakh acres could be irrigated in the four districts. “But the Congress party gave away both projects to Telangana for it political gains,” he said.
