Vijayawada: Members of Andhra Pradesh Asha Workers Union affiliated to CITU staged dharna here on Monday demanding payment of monthly wages of Rs 6,000 wages. However, police blocked their protest. They arrested several CITU leaders and Asha workers and they prevented hundreds of workers from proceeding to Dharna Chowk. In all, the police arrested about 30 women leaders.

Asha Workers Union State general secretary K Dhana Lakshmi, treasurer A Kamala and other leaders were arrested and sent to Pamidimukkala police station under Vijayawada Police Commissionerate.

Subsequently, Asha workers took out a big rally from Dharna Chowk to Collectorate to give a representation to the Collector demanding enhancement of wages. Speaking on the occasion, Asha Workers Union State secretary Dhana Lakshmi demanded that the government must pay Rs 6,000 wages per month.

She further demanded for promotions and uniform allowance. She informed that Kerala State government was paying monthly wages of Rs 7,500 to Asha workers. She said the State government was assigning several additional works to Asha workers and paying them nominal wages. Later, she condemned the arrests made by the police.
