Pithapuram: As many as 30,000 fishermen are yet to receive compensation announced by the government, for the fishing ban period. Only 7,600 got the compensation. Out of Rs 12 crore compensation to be paid to fishermen, only Rs 6 crore has been disbursed.

The state government has to credit Rs 4,000 in the bank accounts of each fisherman for the ban period—April 15 to June 14. It declared the ban to facilitate breeding of fish during the season. The ban period has been extended from 45 days to 61 days during which the fishermen mend their nets and undertake repairs to their boats.

The fishermen are in the habit of borrowing money from the owners of mechanised boats. To wean them away from the practice, the state government announced compensation. There are more than 20,000 fishermen in Kakinada division and 5,000 in Pithapuram constituency.

Fishermen lament that they never received the compensation properly during the past several years. The authorities took their bank account and Aadhaar card details but never credited the amount for months altogether. What the government has been offering by way of compensation is a pittance as it is not sufficient to support their livelihood.

Fisheries assistant director Srinivas said that names of 20,000 fishermen in Kakinada division have been computerised. The department has been facing problems like there are many people at least four with a single name. Moreover, the fishermen frequently change their boats. He said that the compensation would be paid to fishermen shortly.
