Visakhapatnam: Fishermen from the AP coast resumed their ventures into the sea after observing the conservation period of 62 days from the midnight of Wednesday. Of the 700 mechanised boats, only 60 percent of them left for the deep sea after the family members offered special pujas to the `Gangamma Thalli’.

Speaking to The Hans India here on Wednesday, Ch Satyanarayana Murthy, president of Dolphin Boats Association said the local fishermen incurred heavy losses last year. He said only 60 percent of mechanised boats were used and others remained onshore due to the high costs.

He said it costs Rs 3 lakh per each boat for a single voyage. Murhty demanded the government to give a subsidy on the diesel as the fishermen were unable to afford it. “The interest rates are high and if we fail to get a good catch, we will be doomed,’’ said Chepala Bandayya, a boat owner.
