Nellore: The district has been registering constant growth in the sale of both Indian Made Liquor (IML) and beer. Data says the consumption of IML and beer in the entire district was around Rs 874.17 crore during 2013-14 and it significantly shot up to Rs 1,001.06 crore in 2016-17.
Highlights:
- Tipplers enjoyed liquor worth Rs 1001.06 cr in 2016-17 fetching revenue of 132.42 cr to the state exchequer
- Some mandals have been showing good progress in sale of beer whereas IML was getting less response
As per the revenue figures of 2014-15, the Excise department had earned Rs 124 crore in 2013-14 and Rs 132.42 crore during 2016-17. The liquor consumption has gradually been growing according to tastes of tipplers. In fact, there are two Excise divisions at Gudur and Nellore in the district.
The Excise department gave permission to 199 shops in Nellore and 151 shops in Gudur. The Excise department had earned only Rs 5 crore in demonetisation period. There are 61 shops in Nellore-I and Nellore-II areas. The Excise department had registered growth of 2.24 per cent in the sale of the IML and 10.86 per cent growth through beer sales and overall increase of 4.77 per cent in total sale value, according to officials.
Senior officials say they were conducting special drives for closing down the illegal belt shops being run in both urban and rural areas. Interestingly, some places have been witnessing huge sale of beer when compared to IML. Kavali, Udayagiri, Vinjamur, Vakadu, Naidupet and Nellore city have registered negligible growth in the sale of IML whereas tipplers have been showing their love towards chilled beers.
Kovur, Buchireddypalem, Indukurpet, Atmakur, Sullurpet, Venkatagiri, and Rapur have registered growth of 13-14 per cent in sale of beer. Still, there has been dip in sales in some areas like Kavali, Udayagiri and Vinjamur. According to information, 22.12 lakh cases of IML and 11.19 lakh cases of beer was sold during 2013-14. In 2014-15, 22.35 lakh cases of IML and 11.52 cases of beer was sold. Similarly, 22.73 lakh cases of beer and 11.42 cases of IML were sold in 2015-16. In 2016-17, 23.23 lakh cases of IML and 12.66 lakh cases of beer was sold out in the entire district.
“It is unfortunate that consuming liquor has become a cultural aspect of young generation and this has to be changed. Whenever a group of people assemble they immediately think of boozing which signifies the devastating values of present society. Even though, the state exchequer gets benefitted with the coffers, community perception has to be reformed for a healthy society,” said T Badari Narayana, a social activist.
