Visakhapatnam: The Southwest Monsoon covered entire Andhra Pradesh on Wednesday as it has been vigorous over East Godavari, Vizag, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts.
Moderate to heavy rains lashed various parts of the North Andhra region on Wednesday marking the arrival of the Southwest Monsoon in the region.
Further drop in temperature in most parts of the region following the heavy rain in many parts brought considerable respite from the sweltering heat on Wednesday.
Parvathipuram in Vizianagaram district recorded the highest rainfall of 46mm. Dr K Nagaratna, the head of weather forecasting at the Meteorological Centre, Hyderabad, said that until Tuesday the Southwest Monsoon had covered nine districts (south Coastal and Rayalaseema regions) and spread to all the parts of the state on Wednesday morning. Last year the monsoons entered the state on June 18.
The official said the normal onset period of the Southwest Monsoon for Andhra Pradesh and Telangana is June 10 but this year it was delayed by four days. The movement depended on the favourable conditions. The mercury sharply fell all over the State with the advancement of the monsoons.
The local Cyclone Warning Centre said heavy to very heavy rain very likely at isolated places over Coastal Andhra Pradesh on June 15. Following the alert of the heavy rains, the district collector Pravin Kumar has asked all the tahsildars to remain in their headquarters and make arrangements to evacuate the people from the low lying areas.
