Excise Minister K S Jawahar vows to close all belt shops

He stated that while drafting the policy, the government has considered the Supreme Court’s directions. He said at present 749 bars are running in the State and as per the Supreme Court guidelines renewals would be taken up, he added.
He said that every year 10 per cent fee will be enhanced for the bars which were established five years back.

He said that the Excise Act has been strengthened and the retailer or another trader of liquor should sell the liquor only at Maximum Retail Price (MRP). If they failed to sale on MRP and sold the liquor in lose, the licences would be cancelled. Stern action would be taken against those selling spurious liquor, the Minister said.

Another 85 new bars will get permission at various places on the basis of the population up to 30,000 people. He said that there are no political pressures in implementing the new excise policy. He said that compared to Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Odisha and other States, the license fee was lower in AP.

The Minister claimed that no priority was given to generating income through Excise Department in the state. He said that after July 1, no belt shops will be allowed in the State.
