Good news for teachers

New Delhi: The vexatious issue of Unified Service Rules for teachers of local bodies of the two Telugu States has finally been resolved with the President affixing his signature to the file sent to him by the PMO in this regard. Sources said the file got the approval of the President and the Gazette notification would be issued in a day or two.

The long-pending demand of the teachers would be fulfilled with this and nearly three lakh teachers of both the states - two lakh in AP and one lakh in Telangana - would stand to benefit with this development.

The legal battle over this issue dragged on for about two decades after then Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu issued the order in favour of the Unified Service Rules for teachers in 1998.

The Presidential assent means the benefits would come into effect retrospectively from 1998. The Panchayat Raj teachers had been agitating over the variance in service benefits and promotional avenues since long until the TDP government relented finally in 1998.
