Tirupati: In a significant development, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) cops caught Rs 48 lakh worth gold ornaments and Rs 8 lakh cashfrom a passenger at main railway station here on Saturday. RPF constable RN Malleswari scanned the bag of a passenger Bipin R Shahwhile he was entering the railway station. She noticed he was carrying gold ornaments in the bag. Shah is the resident of Sowkarpet in Chennai.

The accused was travelling from Bellary to his native place and got down at Tirupati for some work. He had to catch another train in the afternoon to Chennai and at that time he was caught by the police. The constable informed RPF SI M Srinivasa Reddy. Immediately, RPF and GRP police took the accused into the custody and recovered bag from him.

When questioned, he informed them that he was having gold ornaments and cash in his bag. They took him to CCTV room and examined the articles.

They found Rs 8 lakh cash and 1,345 grams of gold ornaments worth Rs 48 lakh. As he failed to show any authorisation receipts, the railway police have handed over the gold and cash to the Assistant Commercial Tax officer for further enquiry. It was learnt that the accused sell gold to small traders.

The case is under investigation when reports last came in. RPF CI Madhusudana Rao, SI Prabhakar Reddy and GRP CI Adrushtam were investigating the case.
