Vijayawada: Waterman of India Dr Rajendra Singh on Monday said that the construction of upcoming capital of AP Amaravati on floodplains of River Krishna is against the ecology system.He alleged that false reports were given to the Union government by AP to secure permission for construction of the capital city.

Speaking at a round-table meet at the Press Club here, Rajendra Singh said that after he visited Amaravati, he had found several foundation stones laid by the Prime Minister and other Union Ministers on the river flooded plains of Krishna. He strongly objected to the Union government supporting AP government which is violating environmental laws.

He said that the construction work has been in progress at low-lying areas, catchment areas and floodplains at Amaravati and said that serious irregularities were found. The CRDA was building roads and taking up various construction works at the floodplains of River Krishna, he said.

Singh said that river problem is a national problem and all the people of the nation should collectively oppose it. He called upon the people to actively participate in the protest over construction on river plains, which would be organised from Amaravati to Bijapur from August 1 to 15. The protest would cover all the rivers and its tributaries.

He pointed out that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and IT Minister Nara Lokesh had constructed their residences on floodplains violating the rules. He further said that the APCRDA had violated Article 21 and has no clearance from National Green Tribunal (NGT) or MoEF to build capital city on floodplains. Such constructions are also against the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, he added.
