Chittoor: The state government reportedly wants to hand over district headquarters hospital to Apollo Group of Hospitals as medical officers, doctors and nursing staff of Government General Hospital here have received transfer orders a couple of days ago. They were transferred to the nearby Andhra Pradesh Vaidya Vidhana Parishad (APVVP) hospitals in the district.

The management of Apollo Hospitals has shifted its specialist doctors, medical officers and nursing and paramedical staff to government hospital. Now, the stage has been set to shift government hospital to Madanapalle.

The strength of government doctors has come down drastically with recent transfers. At present, 21 government doctors are working as against earlier strength of 42. It may be mentioned here that Apollo Group of Hospitals has taken over district headquarters hospital on 33 years lease for providing clinical services to patients and establishing a medical college here.

The local people and opposition parties have opposed leasing out government hospital to a corporate entity. Even, government doctors working here are against handing over hospital to Apollo Hospitals.

There has been no coordination and cooperation between government and Apollo doctors ever since hospital was handed over to Apollo two years ago which has prompted the state government to shift government hospital to Madanapalle and hand over entire set up of district headquarters hospital to Apollo.

Speaking to The Hans India, an official spokesman of the AP Government Doctors Association said that it is difficult for government doctors to perform duties with the pressure exerted by the Apollo management. A senior doctor working in the hospital said that they are prepared to extend full cooperation for the management of Apollo.

“It is unfortunate that we are feeling insecure to continue in the hospital due to various reasons,” he added.
He opined that patients can get better services if the government doctors and Apollo doctors work with cooperation. He recalled APVVP Joint Commissioner Dr P L Jayachandra Reddy during his recent visit had assured of not shifting the government hospital to another place in the district.
