Couple jumps into sea; wife survives

Visakhapatnam: A couple jumped into the sea near RK Beach in a bid to end their life but the man died while his wife survived. The incident took place in the early hours of Thursday.

Police said prior to the incident, couple had alcohol all day. The deceased was identified as A Ramana (45), a scrap dealer from Marripalem area in the city.

III Town CI B Venkat Rao said Ramana and his wife often fought at home as he was coming home drunk every day. Apart from drinking, Ramana lost lot of money in gambling and piled debts.

On Wednesday night, Ramana came home drunk as usual and had heated argument with his wife. Later, she proposed to him that both should end their lives. Ramana lost no time in accepting the proposal and they reached RK Beach in an auto-rickshaw at around midnight. They consumed alcohol near the shore and then decided to commit suicide.

While the woman fell nearby the shore in unconscious state, Ramana continued his walk to his death. A few locals who noticed them alerted the police.

The night patrolling police fished out Ramana’a body and shifted unconscious woman to hospital. The woman who got saved was regretting over the decision taken after seeing the body of her husband, the police said.

The couple is survived by two children, who already got married. Police registered a case and shifted the body to King George Hospital for autopsy.
