Visakhapatnam: Taking a cue from their urban counterparts, women in the tribal village of Chintapalle in the agency, too, have stepped up their fight against the location of a wine shop.

The village, a major panchayat, has a population of 5,000 and the average income of these people is not more than Rs 6,000 which they earn as labourers and agriculture income from small holdings of land.

The women said that their men has been spending 50 per cent of their income on alcohol leaving a little for the family. There are two licensed shops and one of them is located in the heart of the village on the main road close to Mutadari Street where most of the women fetch their drinking water from the taps.

Women have to pass through this wine shop to buy groceries and the girls to their college.

The women and college going girls began demanding shifting of this wine shop. On Thursday, they raised slogans and took out a massive rally. Later, they smashed couple of liquor bottles as a protest.

The women told reporters that young tribalmen, who were addicted to alcohol, were blowing up their hard earned wages on liquor and neglecting their families. Surprisingly, ruling TDP Mandal Market Committee chairman M Shaik Nazer Valli participated in the protest organised by women and expressed his solidarity with them.

The CPI members were present.Justifying the location of the shop, Anakapalle excise superintendent S Sukesh, told this correspondent that the shop has been running in the same place for the past two years.Women should lodge a complaint with the police if there was any nuisance, he suggested.
