women organisations members and others, tried to block the deputy commissioner of excise in protest against the granting of permissions to open new bars and wine shops in residential areas of the city.

CPI secretary Donepudi Shankar strongly condemned the statement of Excise Minister KS Jawahar that beer is a health drink. He said that the government had taken up excise department as a main source of income.

He said that the government failed to provide text books to students at the government schools for education, drinking water facilities and other basic amenities and was giving licences to liquor shops, he said.
