Later, speaking to the reporters, he said that after completion of development works, the airport would cater to the needs of international tourists Meanwhile, a cargo terminal was also coming up which helps in export of flowers, fruits and other agricultural products.

“The airport will have a largest runway in the state after its expansion. It will have parking facility for four big aircrafts in addition to the existing one craft and eight helicopters,” the MP informed.

The government has given 860 acres of land in addition to the existing 367 acres in Madhurapudi village. “Many are asking to name the airport after a great personality and a decision will be taken after consulting with Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu,” Murali Mohan said.

Airport director M Raj Kishore added that the existing runway would be expanded to 3,165 metres as against of 1,749 metres with shoulders on both sides along with a width of 60 metres, to land big crafts such as Boeing, 737,900, A 321 etc. At present the airport is facilitating only ATR 72 flights.

The facilities to be available in the airport are, four new aprons in addition to the existing two aprons, to park four flights, eight helicopters, a cargo terminal, Instrumental Landing System (ILS) to land flights even in bad weather and an a special bay to keep flights having threat. To avoid accidents because of overshoot, a sand bed is also created.
