Vijayawada: DGP N Sambasiva Rao said that the police booked 12 criminal cases in connection with the violence that broke out with permission being denied for proposed Kurukshetram Maha Sabha. He said the angry protestors torched a police vehicle and broke the glasses of Toll gate near Kaza on the national highway between Vijayawada-Guntur on Friday.

Speaking to media persons, here on Saturday, the DGP said that MRPS activists stormed the national highway though the permission was not given for the Kurukshetra Maha Sabha. They staged dharna for six hours blocking traffic in Jaggaiahpet mandal bordering Andhra Pradesh and Telangana.

“Six cases were booked in Guntur district and another six in Krishna district on charges of resorting to violence and blocking the traffic. Vijayawada police have detained 357 persons came from Telangana state for Kurukshetra Maha Sabha,” he added.

The DGP informed that criminal cases were booked against MRPS founder leader Manda Krishna Madiga for allegedly instigating the violence.

Sambasiva Rao said property worth Rs.10 lakh was damaged in the violence. “Though the police denied permission, thousands of MRPS activists, who were hiding nearby in the farm lands ran towards the national highway obstructing the traffic.

Traffic was held up at Balusupadu check post in Jaggaiapet mandal for six hours,” he noted Referring to the torching of vehicles and breaking of glasses of Toll plaza between Vijayawada-Guntur, the DGP said the law has long arms and the culprits would be booked and punished at any cost.

He said the police were trying to collect clues from video clippings, body worn cameras, recordings from drone cameras and other sources. Asked about the involvement of Telangana MRPS activists, he said that about 50 per cent participants were from Khammam and Warangal districts of Telangana.

The DGP said that the police had dealt with lot of restraint and patience to convince the protestors to withdrawn agitation and allow the stranded vehicles move.
