Dwaraka Tirumala: The local women agitated against the opening of a liquor shop in between residential areas in Kamavarapukota on Sunday.

The women with brooms and chappals reached the liquor shop that was opened in the busy Kamavarapukota-Eluru-Jangareddigudem road centre. They obstructed the opening of the shop and warned the employees not to open the shop. The women demanded the officials close the shops in between residential areas and near the schools and temples.

Women leaders Kalidindi Chandravathi, M Subbalakshmi led the agitation in front of the liquor shop. The women leaders stated that the liquor shops were established in the residential localities in Kamavarapukota and other villages in the mandal. They stated the liquor shop was situated opposite Goddess Durga temple in the village.

They said that school-going children and women board the buses at the junction. They alleged that officials have given permissions to liquor shops near the schools, temples and residential localities.

They warned that no liquor shop will be allowed on the main road and amidst residential areas of the village. They added that they will continue the agitation until the shop was closed.

CPI mandal committee secretary TVS Raju said that the officials are not adhering to the rules and permitting the liquor shops in the residential areas, near schools and temples. He extended solidarity with the women agitators.

The shop employee K Mohan said that they will open the shop after the shop owner discuss the issue with the women leaders.
