Rajamahendravaram: The state government has been earning an annual income of Rs 27,000 crore by continuing existing liquor shops in the district by hook or crook.

Earlier, the Apex Court gave a judgement to ban the liquor shops within 500 mts from national and state highways. Based on the judgement, the state government issued a G.O number 28, which changed the status of state roads as district roads.

According to sources, as many as 200 km long state roads in municipalities, municipal corporations and mandals of the district were changed into district roads category, allowing the existing liquor shops along state highways to continue as usual.

In Kakinada and Rajamahendravaram municipal corporations as many as 10 km of state roads were changed as district roads, 50 km of state roads were categorised as district roads in nine municipalities and 130 km length of roads in 64 mandals were changed as district roads.

While the owners of liquor shops as well as the officials of prohibition and excise department are expressing happiness over this decision, women are protesting over the attitude of the government to continue liquor shops by degrading the status of state roads to district roads.
