Pithapuram: Scientists of Central Plantation Crops Research Institute (CPCRI), Kerala, here on Wednesday inspected suitable site at FK Palem to establish a research station on inter-crops in coconut plantations.

Along with additional district collector Radhakrishna Murthy, scientists Dr Nirrar and Dr Shamshuddin inspected various suitable sites for the research station. They said that the proposed research station would be affiliated to Central Coconut Plantation and Research.

“While tens of varieties of coconut are being cultivated in Kerala, Andhra Pradesh is limited to cultivation of only four or five varieties,” they said.

“Suitable place with atmospheric conditions is being searched in coastal Andhra Pradesh to replicate the Kerala experiment to cultivate coconut plantations along with intercrops,” they said. Pithapuram tahsildar B Suguna and others accompanied the scientists.

Cotton farmers: Cotton farmers, who have incurred losses due to bollworm during the last two years in Gollapudi mandal are now concerned over the weevil attacking the crop. The area under cotton crop in the mandal is about 8,000 acres.

The timely rains during this year are encouraging the cotton prices. However, they lament that weevil is attacking the crop when the seeds are germinating.

Agriculture joint director KSV Prasad, along with assistant director, Padmasri and agriculture officer Sudha Madhuri, visited the cotton fields and noted that weevils are found more on the crops close to casuarinas and other crops. He advised the farmers to spray neem decoction on the crop.
