Atmakur (Kurnool): Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu sanctioned Rs 30 lakh towards surveying the plunge pool (a ditch formed due to water pressure from the dam) that is stated to be a threat to Srisailam project. It may be recalled that The Hans India published news under the title ‘Plunge pool may pose a threat to Srisailam dam’ on June 8, 2017.

Dam safety committee, which inspected the dam, had advised the Chief Minister for a survey. The state government kept the National Institute of Oceanography’s (NIO) underwater videography report conducted in 2014 under the wrap. Now the government is gearing up for a fresh survey. This itself is an indication that there is a huge threat to the project.

The inflows of flood water may reach the dam in 40 days. The present level of the water is 780.02 ft. According to engineers a quick survey would help in taking necessary steps to fix the problem. They say that it would be virtually impossible to build again such huge rock-built reservoir which was constructed at a cost of Rs 500 crore between 1963 and 1982 if something happens to it.
