Visakhapatnam: The members of city committee of CPM staged a dharna here on Saturday demanding introduction of Women’s Reservation Bill in Parliament.

Talking to the reporters, city president of CPM Dr B Gangaarao said their party has been agitating for years for the Bill but the successive ruling parties have neglected the issue.

After a long time, the Bill was introduced in Parliament in 1996 and handed it over to Joint Parliamentary Committee headed by veteran Communist party leader Geeta Mukherjee. The committee submitted the report tabled in the Rajya Sabha in 2010 but it was not discussed in the Lok Sabha.

He said it was unfortunate that UP Chief Minister Adityanath Yogi has been opposing the Bill. Women participated equally in the independent struggle sporting khadi sarees and now their representation in the legislative bodies is less than 10 per cent, he added .
