Visakhapatnam: The prohibition and excise officials of Gajuwaka unit on Sunday busted a racket, which involved smuggling of ganja from Visakhapatnam to New Delhi with a base camp at Sagarnagar residential colony.

The arrested person was identified as Mohammed Hafizulla and another accused disappeared. They seized 160 kgs of dry ganja stored in two kg packets in a double bed room at Sagarnagar Colony.

Explaining the modus operandi, assistant superintendent of prohibition and excise B Ravindranath said Hafizulla was exporting sofa sets to New Delhi with dry ganja neatly packed inside. After unloading the contraband there, empty sofas were coming back to the flat. This was going on for the past six months.

Explaining how they busted the chain, Ravindranath said they arrested one tribal youth carrying ganja from the Agency to Visakhapatnam city by bus. After questioning, the youth confessed that he, along with others, have been supplying the ganja to Delhi-based smuggler delivering the goods at the beach.

“This has been going on since six months. Hafizulla was paying Rs 5,000 to the youth per two kgs and selling in New Delhi for Rs 50,000. The neighbours never suspected him or questioned his occupation,’’ the assistant superintendent said.
