The state government decided to close schools which have less than student strength of 20 and the students will be admitted in nearby schools. The teachers will be transferred to other schools where there are vacancies. The teachers’ unions and elected representatives are against rationalisation.

The Collector stressed on the need for strengthening the government schools. He reportedly opined that private and corporate schools will get the patronage from the parents once the government schools are closed.

According to official information, there are 3,547 primary schools, 444 upper primary schools and 516 high schools in which 2.81 lakh students are studying in the district. About 16,279 teachers are working in the government schools. According to sources, 531 schools are running with single teachers in the district.

Meanwhile, Industries Minister N Amaranatha Reddy reportedly made an appeal to HRD Minister Ganta Srinivasa Rao to exclude Chittoor district from rationalisation. It is learnt that the HRD Minister has reportedly expressed his inability in exempting the district as rationalisation of schools is the state policy.

The Industries Minister and District Collector have decided to take up the issue with Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu. The Chief Minister is expected to visit Kuppam on Thursday, who is expected to take a decision in this regard. Now, DEO Samuel is caught in a dilemma whether to follow the government policy or obey the instructions of the Industries Minister and the Collector.
