Visakhapatnam: Rural police seized 576 kg dry ganja and arrested five smugglers while they were transporting the contraband in a car and van near Alluri Park at AL Puram under KD Peta police station limits on Wednesday.

However, three of them managed to escape from the spot. Inspector of Koyyuru PVB Uday Kumar said that based on concrete information that ganja was being transported in a car and van, the police intensified the vehicular check to find the ganja.

Noticing the police teams, the smugglers tried to evade the check gate by diverting the vehicles. However, five smugglers were caught by the police and three fled the spot.

The police found five bags of ganja in the car and 19 bags in the van weighing 576 kgs. The police also seized Rs 37,000 cash and four mobiles besides two bikes and the ganja laden vehicles from the gang.

The arrested were identified as Atchyuta Appalanaidu (30), a native of AL Puram, Kethavath Senkar Nayak (25), a resident of Hasmanbagh Thanda in Guntur district, Ramavath Siva Kumar (23), a native of Ranga Reddy, Ramavath Hanuma (37) and Banavath Naga (24), both from Nalgonda district in Telangana State.

The gang has procured the contraband from Agency. Cases were registered under various Sections of NDPS Act and investigation is on to nab three others, the CI said.
