Tension prevailed at Devarapalli village in Parchuru mandal of Prakasam district as the officials started desilting of the disputed land at Krishnamraju tank on Thursday amid hundreds of police keeping vigil on the Dalits from the village. Parchuru: Tension prevailed at Devarapalli village in Parchuru mandal of Prakasam district as the officials started desilting of the disputed land at Krishnamraju tank on Thursday amid hundreds of police keeping vigil on the Dalits from the village. Dalits and workers of various Opposition parties were arrested at Devarapalli, Parchuru and Ongole while desilting works were going on.

About 39 Dalit families in Devarapalli, a village in Parchuru mandal, are fighting to reclaim their right over 22 acres land, which is being cultivated by them for the past three decades.

The land, which is a part of the village tank once, is identified by the government under Neeru-Chettu scheme for renovation and de-silting after the local panchayat passed a resolution for the revival of the tank to address the drinking and agricultural needs of the village.

But the families are opposing the decision of the government and it’s taking back of the land by using force and banning the entry of public into it.

The police and revenue officials reached Devarapalli village on Thursday. Around 300 police personnel, including four DSPs, eight CIs, 10 SIs, 200 constables and 80 women constables were deployed at the entrance of the village, Dalit locality and at the 32 acres Krishnamraju tank. The revenue officials ordered the workers to start the digging works around 4 am and the works continued till night.

The police took the Dalit leaders into custody in the midnight and started arresting the men and women whoever opposed the activity of digging in the disputed land.

They arrested CPM district secretary Punati Anjaneyulu, Congress district president Eda Sudhakar Reddy and several leaders from CPI, CPM, YSRCP and Congress in Ongole and shifted them to Jarugumalli police station.

The police also arrested YSRCP Bapatla Loksabha constituency in-charge Dr Amruthapani, mandal-level CPI and CPM leaders at Parchuru and house arrested Parchuru Assembly in-charge of YSRCP Gottipati Bharat in Chilakaluripet.
