Vijayawada: Denizens are facing innumerable hardships due to stagnation of rainwater in many parts of the city due to poor drainage system and negligence of the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation.The problem is very severe in areas where underground drainage system is existing. Due to UGD connections, the VMC did not construct the side drains for free flow of rainwater.

  • Storm water mingling with drain water entering homes

Consequently, water is logging in the streets and on main roads causing hardships to the commuters. The situation is worse at Surayaraopet, Seetharamapuram, Mogalrajapuram, Christurajapuram, PB Siddhartha College Junction, Maruti Nagar and other areas.

Where drain water is overflowing, along with the rainwater, emanating filthy smell. The civic body has also not taken up desiltation works before the rainy season.

Road between Sunnapubateelu and ESI hospital junction road is in a bad condition with many potholes and huge craters. Residents of that area have been facing problems for a long time. But, there is no response from the VMC. Rain water mixed with drainage water entering the houses causing horrible conditions for many residents.

Not only residents of that particular area, but also pedestrians and commuters, who pass on that road, are suffering due to damaged roads. Two wheelers are losing balance in the rainwater and falling on the ground.

“Christurajapuram main road is used by a large number of people, including government officials, judicial officers and political leaders. Interestingly, Deputy Chief Minister KE Krishna Murthy is also living in this area and passing through this road. But VMC officials have not laid the new road or repaired it to check hardships of commuters.

Local resident Kusuma of Christurajapuram said though many representations were given to officials and leaders there is no change on the condition of the road, she added. “Plastic is blocking the side drains,” said welder Chandu, who is running a welding shop, along the road. The local residents are demanding the VMC to take up repair works immediately to check problems in the rainy season.
