Visakhapatnam: Once again, the British-made World War - II bunker in the Port City resurfaced at the RK Beach here. However, most of them are not aware of the heritage structure as no information was put up explaining the reasons why it had come up and other nitty-gritties of that period.

The monument bunker of war-times is playing a hide-seek game for the past several years. Located just a few feet away from VUDA Aquarium, the defensive military fortification structure has resurfaced two days ago. For the past several years, mostly in July, it has been springing up and later getting submerged in the sands of the beach.

Apart from this bunker, there are four others. One is at One Town Area near the port conveyer belt, another big bunker at Jalaripeta region near Kailasagiri, according to Intach member Edward Paul.

"Till early 1980's this particular bunker is very much like a structure on the sand as the shoreline used to be far away unlike now. Still remember, one of our teachers explained about the importance of the bunker and told us to have a glance eat this one," shared Mahi, who spends most of the evenings at the beach, adding that with a major industrial activity and developments in last three decades, there has been a sea-change in the Port City.

“With the increase in the activity at outer harbour and huge expansion of container terminal berths in the port at one end, the soil erosion is happening at a faster pace and the sea has been advancing at alarm levels at another place. Surely, when we interfere with nature, it has its own effect. So, these bunkers get lost into the sea. When there are low tides, they would be exposed,” explained Edward Paul .
